Insuring New Hires Succeed

Make Them Feel Welcome

  • Pair them for a few days with a positive influence
  • Introduce them to others in their area
  • Make others accountable for their success
  • Make sure they have a lunch buddy
  • Give them some positive attention
  • Let them know you have an open door policy
  • Prepare them for the negatives they may encounter
  • Communicate any changes that they may not be aware of

Attempt to Understand

  • Different background and cultures may influence work expectations
  • People repeat behavior that is not corrected
  • Be aware of the negative influences in your department
  • Be in tune to the quality of their training
  • Ask questions instead of assuming

Set Clear Expectation

  • New employees don’t try to mess up…they just don’t know
  • Are the expectations consistent with others in the department
  • Document the expectations
  • Follow up and give positive feedback when expectations are met
  • Use the OREO technique for giving negative feedback:
    • Positive/Negative/Positive
    • Schedule a regular time to follow up and get feedback periodically in the first week, month and ninety days
