Interviewing Do's

  • Do…be mentally prepared. Get a good night’s sleep before your interview. Practice what you are going to say and what questions you want to ask.
  • Do…look your best. Make sure your hair is clean and neatly styled (don’t forget about your fingernails!). Wear a conservative suit, tie, shirt and dress shoes for men. A suit or long-sleeved dress and heels for women along with conservative make-up. You want your potential employer to remember you and what you can contribute—not your outfit.
  • Do…arrive a few minutes early. This can be your time to relax and prepare yourself mentally for the interview.
  • Do…fill out your application carefully. Make sure it is neat, legible, and the spelling is correct.
  • Do…have appropriate questions to ask the employer.
  • Do…have good eye contact with the interviewer. Look him or her straight in the eye when you are talking.
  • Do…thank the interviewer for his or her time. If you are interested, make sure you let him know.
  • Do…send a carefully written and proofed thank-you note to the interviewer expressing your interest again.
  • Do…refrain from negative talk about former employers or teachers…always be upbeat and positive.
  • Do…leave your chewing gum and cigarettes at home (and decline even if offered one).
  • Do…refrain from overemphasizing salary and “what the company can do for you”.
